Volunteers are the heart of our organization, providing essential support to seniors in Friendship Heights, MD. Whether you help with transportation, errands, or simply offer a friendly conversation, you’ll be making a real impact in someone's life.

Volunteering with us is flexible and rewarding. Choose from a variety of roles that fit your schedule and interests. Many of our volunteers, especially those in their 50s and beyond, find deep satisfaction in helping their peers maintain independence and connection.

Who Are Our Volunteers?

We welcome individuals of all ages and abilities. Young people love connecting with other generations through service with FHNN. Those over 50 find this work especially rewarding.

Those working from home in Friendship Heights enjoy the ease of service that comes with proximity. Our service area consists of the nine high-rise residential buildings in Friendship Heights, and many of our volunteers live in the area.

Ways to Volunteer

There are three ways to volunteer at FHNN.

Direct services
  • Rides to doctors appointments or activities
  • Social visits to seniors at-risk of loneliness
  • Pick up of groceries and prescriptions
  • Errands in the community, including going to the library and post office
  • Technology support, both computer and smart phone
  • Personal support, including phone check ins and reading
  • Collecting and sorting mail
  • Minor in-home tasks and repair, such as watering plants
Administrative
  • Event assistance, including registration and set up
  • Office support, such as envelope stuffing
  • Membership and volunteer outreach
  • Accounting/bookkeeping
Advisory and Leadership
  • Advisory Committees

    Each of the buidings in our service area has an FHNN representative living in that building. It's a fun and rewarding job. We're looking for building Reps in Somerset Houses and Wisconsin Place.  
The Details

Training: You'll receive a detailed Volunteer Handbook and a personal, one-on-one orientation session. 

Safety & Privacy: All direct service volunteers must pass a routine background check and sign a privacy agreement, which gives our members a sense of comfort. Those offering transportation services also have their driving record checked. These checks are standard in volunteer-based organizations.
 

Liability: You are protected from liability connected to your FHNN service through both FHNN liability insurance and Maryland state law.
